2017 Workshop Schedule

Sky, Land & Sea, Pt. Reyes National Seashore

The Historic Lifeboat Station is nestled in a cove near Chimney Rock and provides a quintessential location for exploring the landscape elements of sky, land and sea. Join the class for a unique opportunity to bring these elements to life and commit them to memory in your nature journal. You will learn to quickly sketch and paint these elements using thumbnail images that give you practice indoors before venturing out into nature with your compact kit where awareness of your senses bring depth to your pages. Writing and page layout will also be introduced as we delve into the representation of this amazing landscape.

When: Friday, April 21 5pm – Sunday, April 23 2pm

Wildflowers, Castle in the Air, Berkeley

Each Spring we anticipate the emergence of wildflowers whose colors and forms bring such delight to our senses. Bring samples from your garden (suggested, but not required) and we will learn to mix and match the subtle to flamboyant colors of petals and leaves, explore simple techniques for blocking in the shapes and details, and dream up words that express our observations and responses to these humble bearers of joy! You will be given my simple palette with eight pigments that you'll learn to transform into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors. You'll also be provided a journal, a water brush, and other tools to take home.

Trees in your Watercolor Nature Journal, Pt Reyes

In this workshop, you'll learn various techniques for sketching the gestures and energy of trees and painting them with a wide range of nuanced colors that you will learn to mix from a simple palette of eight pigments. We'll explore the complexity of branching that forms the skeleton for the leaves in Spring and Summer, and the bare silhouettes in Winter. The compact kit* which includes the palette and paints, a journal, a waterbrush and special pencils provides you with all you need to nurture a wonderful nature journaling experience.

Emandal ArtStays I

For the fifth year Tam Adams is hosting this wonderful 4-Day retreat at Emandal Farm, a beautiful and bucolic farm with rustic cabins, a gorgeous dining room where three gourmet farm food meals are served, a beautiful garden and abundant natural surroundings. We will spend the mornings together mixing colors, learning techniques for rendering plants and landscapes, and experimenting with page layout. The afternoons can be spent however you want - hiking the trails of this 1,000 acre farm, swimming in the beautiful adjoining Eel River, and sketching and writing in your journals. Reflections in your Waterccolor Nature Journal

Even the smallest pond can tell the story of the sky and landscape which surrounds it. How does one capture the magic of the reflections of the landscape in water? We will learn to understand the colors that we see in water, and through a series of exercises, transform a three dimensional wonder into a two dimensional jewel in your nature journal. You will be given my simple palette with eight pigments that you’ll learn to mix into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors. You’ll also be provided a journal, a water brush and other tools to take home.

The Way of Water in Your Watercolor Nature Journal

Water moves through the Lakes Basin as an ever-present undercurrent to the land surrounding the Sierra Buttes. In this class, we will explore techniques for capturing close-ups of water, thumbnail landscapes and wildflowers in our watercolor nature journals. We will spend the first morning learning to use our compact kits mixing a full range of colors with a limited palette of pigments. Each day we will take easy hikes to one of four different locations including waterfalls, lakes and streams. The evening before we will work with small photos to gain comfort with sketching and painting the setting of the following day, and each morning I will give demonstrations on-site before we get started. (The kit is required and available on the first day for an additional fee).

A Sense of Place, Pt Reyes

Using a limited number of pigments, you’ll learn to paint miniature landscapes to give your journal a sense of place. You’ll get hands-on experience in how to create depth quickly and accurately using my teaching aids while creating a memory of your day. $55 required kit fee.

Fall Color at the Laguna de Santa Rosa

I am pleased to have been asked to return to the Laguna de Santa Rosa to teach a workshop featurning the transitioning landscape from Fall to Winter. We will sketch close up studies of plants and distant vistas of fields and mountains. You will learn to mix a full range of colors from a simple palette of eight harmonious pigments, and hands-on aids will help you create depth in your landscapes and close up sketches. You will also spend time writing, which combines with your sketching to bring to life the memory of your day. The beautiful classroom offers the opportunity to work rain or shine with its huge picture windows and outdoor overhangs.

Native Plants in your Watercolor Nature Journal, Botanic Gardens,Tilden Park

In this workshop, you'll explore techniques for capturing close-up sketches of the garden’s wonderful array of native plants. You'll begin by mixing a full range of nuanced colors using a limited number of pigments followed by the introduction to hands-on teaching aids that help you transfer the magic you see to your journal. Finally, you’ll combine note taking and prose with our paintings out on the trails.
