2017 - 2018 Workshop Schedule

Hills, Mountains & Cliffs - Castle in the Air

We are drawn to the shapes that rise up from the surface of the earth in the form of hills, mountains and cliffs. In this workshop you will learn to re-create the soft rolling texture of hills, the majestic rise of mountains and the jagged and precarious nature of cliffs using Kristin’s hands-on teaching teaching aids. You will begin by·exploring the colors in your palette as you bring their subtle colors and powerful shapes to life.·You will be given Kristin’s simple kit with eight pigments that you’ll learn to transform into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors.·You’ll also be provided a journal, a water brush, and other tools to take home.

When: Sunday, September 10th, 11am to 5pm

The Dynamic Sky - Pt Reyes

The every changing sky affects deeply affects the mood of the day. We feel it internally, and we witness it visually. You will learn techniques to render clear blue skies, billowing cumulus clouds, wispy cirrus clouds, dark and ominous stratus clouds and colorful sunsets. You will be given Kristin’s simple palette with eight pigments that you’ll learn to mix into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors. You’ll also be provided a journal, a water brush and other tools to take home.

When: Saturday, September 16, 9am to 3pm
Cost: $105 members/$125 non-member

Designing Your Own Page: Watercolor Nature Journaling - Castle in the Air

Element by element you will learn to build a page that gives the feeling of your experience in nature. Where to begin? You will add color matching dots, pencil sketches of a details, watercolor "sense of place” landscapes, and prose to an underlying flexible structure to bring your page to life. Kristin’s extensive background as a graphic designer and artist is what gives her pages a cohesive and delightful presence, and she will share with you her process in this workshop.·You will be given Kristin’s simple kit with eight pigments that you’ll learn to transform into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors and you’ll also be provided a journal, a water brush, and other tools to take home.

Native Plants in your Watercolor Nature Journal, Botanic Gardens,Tilden Park

In this workshop, you'll explore techniques for capturing close-up sketches of the garden’s wonderful array of native plants. You'll begin by mixing a full range of nuanced colors using a limited number of pigments followed by the introduction to hands-on teaching aids that help you transfer the magic you see to your journal. Finally, you’ll combine note taking and prose with our paintings out on the trails.

When: Sunday, October 15, 9:30am to 3:30 pm

The Magic of Water in your Watercolor Nature Journal - Pt Reyes

We are fascinated by water, whether as streams, waterfalls, or lakes; it is an ever-present undercurrent to the landscape as it calls us to ponder the mysteries beneath the surface or reflects the land and sky above. Through a series of exercises you will learn to distill this moving wonder into simple shapes that you will transfer into your journal and render in graphite and watercolor. You will learn the power of color mixing using Kristin’s simple palette of 8 pigments along with hands-on techniques to render the magic of water.

When: Saturday, November 4, 9am to 3pm

Watercolor Techniques in your Nature Journal - Castle in the Air

I will help demystify watercolor techniques for your nature journal - such as charging, wet on wet, graduated washes, lifting and glazing - that will give sparkle and depth to your journal sketches. You will begin by mixing a world of colors with just eight pigments after which you’ll create a library of techniques to refer to out in nature. You’ll leave with a journal filled with color swatches, test patches, your color palette, a·waterbrush and additional special tools to continue your journey.

When: Sunday November 12, 11am to 5pm

Fall to Winter Transitions at the Laguna de Santa Rosa

Due to the fires in Santa Rosa we have rescheduled this class to November 19th. We will sketch close up studies of plants and distant vistas of fields and mountains. You will learn to mix a full range of colors from a simple palette of eight harmonious pigments, and hands-on aids will help you create depth in your landscapes and close up sketches. You will also spend time writing, which combines with your sketching to bring to life the memory of your day. The beautiful classroom offers the opportunity to work rain or shine with its huge picture windows and outdoor overhangs.

Trees in your Watercolor Nature Journal - Pt Reyes

In this workshop, you'll learn various techniques for sketching the gestures and energy of trees and painting them with a wide range of nuanced colors that you will learn to mix from a simple palette of eight pigments. We'll explore the complexity of branching that forms the skeleton for the leaves in Spring and Summer, and the bare silhouettes in Winter. The compact kit* which includes the palette and paints, a journal, a waterbrush and special pencils provides you with all you need to nurture a wonderful nature journaling experience.

Sky, Land & Sea in your Watercolor Nature Journal

The Historic Lifeboat Station is nestled in a cove near Chimney Rock and provides a quintessential location for exploring the landscape elements of sky, land and sea. Join the class for a unique opportunity to bring these elements to life and commit them to memory in your nature journal. You will learn to quickly sketch and paint these elements using thumbnail images that give you practice indoors before venturing out into nature with your compact kit where awareness of your senses bring depth to your pages. Writing and page layout will also be introduced as we delve into the representation of this amazing landscape.
