2018 Workshop Schedule

Experience the Magic of Water in your Watercolor Nature Journal

Water moves through the Lakes Basin as an ever-present undercurrent to the land surrounding the Sierra Buttes. In this workshop, we will explore techniques for capturing the dynamic energy of water, along with rocks and wildflowers in our journals. We will spend the first morning learning to use our compact kits mixing a full range of colors from a limited palette of pigments. Each day we will take a 1-3 mile hike to different locations including waterfalls, lakes and streams. The evening before we will work with small photos to gain comfort with sketching and painting the setting of the following day, and each morning I will give demonstrations on-site before we get started. There will also be an emphasis on page layout and adding notes and prose to your pages.

When: June 17 - 22
Cost: TBA ($55 kit fee required).
Register: Sierra Nevada Field Campus

Rocks, Mountains and Cliffs in your Watercolor Nature Journal

We are drawn to the shapes that rise up from the surface of the earth in the form of hills, mountains and cliffs. In this workshop you will learn to re-create the soft rolling texture of hills, the majestic rise of mountains and the jagged and precarious nature of cliffs which form the pathway of water - all using my hands-on teaching teaching aids. You will begin by exploring the colors in your palette as you bring their subtle colors and powerful shapes to life. You will be given my simple kit with eight pigments that you’ll learn to transform into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors. You’ll also be provided a journal, a water brush, and other tools to take home. This workshop forms the background for Streams, Waterfalls and Lakes, but is not required.

When: Saturday, July 7, 11 am to 5 pm
Cost: $135 (includes kit)
Register: Castle in the Air

Streams, Waterfalls and Lakes

Through a series of exercises you will learn to distill this moving wonder into simple shapes that you will transfer into your journal and render in graphite and watercolor. You will be given my simple palette with 8 pigments that you will learn to transform into a full range of beautiful and harmonious colors, as well as a journal, a waterbrush and other tools to take home. Rocks, Mountains and Cliffs forms the background for this workshop, but it is not required.

"…. you did WAY more than teach us to play with watercolors. The whole drive home over the mountain after the workshop I saw colors and shadows I never see.

This morning I was looking at the way the mountains get lighter and go to blue in the distance.

This afternoon I was seeing how the light comes through the trees.

So cool… the waking up you did with us!"
